In short

  • On the OLT, turn off interactive prompts and paging, then run display current-configuration.
  • On VRP, screen-length 0 temporary turns off paging for the current session only.
  • The backup shows the running configuration, including changes not yet saved with save.

01SmartAX OLT

On Huawei OLTs, the whole configuration (boards, line and service profiles, ONTs, service-ports, VLANs) comes out of a single command. Before running it, turn off interactive prompts and paging, or the output stops at every screen waiting for a key:

enable
undo smart
undo interactive
scroll
display current-configuration

On OLTs with many ONTs the output is long and can take a few minutes. That is normal; the collection tool has to wait until the prompt comes back.

02Saved versus running configuration

The OLT has two configurations: the one running now (display current-configuration) and the one it loads on reboot (display saved-configuration). A change that was made but not saved with save is lost on the next reboot.

Backing up the running configuration has an advantage: it keeps even what someone forgot to save. If the OLT reboots and comes back without a recent change, that day's backup shows exactly what needs to be reapplied.

03VRP routers and switches

On VRP devices (NE and AR routers, S and CE switches), paging is turned off for the current session only, without changing the configuration:

screen-length 0 temporary
display current-configuration

It is also worth keeping display version and display device: system version and installed boards, useful to know whether a backup can go back onto a device running another version.

04Passwords in the file

VRP shows passwords encrypted, between %^%# markers. Encrypted does not mean safe to publish: treat the backup as sensitive data.

By default Nexus keeps the full configuration, so everything can be restored. If the installation is set to strip passwords from backups, on VRP routers and switches Nexus replaces those encrypted passwords and PINs with a placeholder. On the SmartAX OLT it keeps the configuration exactly as printed, removing nothing, so access to the backup server must be restricted.

05Automatic collection with Nexus

Nexus collects both Huawei product lines:

LineDevicesWhat it runs
SmartAXOLTs, over SSH or Telnetenable, undo interactive, undo smart, scroll and display current-configuration
VRPRouters and switches, over SSH or Telnetscreen-length 0 temporary, display version, display device and display current-configuration all

Collection runs at the scheduled time, stores a new version only when the configuration changed, and lets you compare any two dates. To restore, see How to restore a configuration from backup.

All of this, every day, no scripts

Nexus, by TektAxis, collects the configuration of routers, OLTs and switches on your own server, keeps every version, shows what changed and sends a copy to the cloud.
